Prolific singer songwriter Iain Matthews, as leader of folk-rock and country band Matthews Southern Comfort, scored a global smash hit with his cover of Joni Mitchell’s Woodstock. It was a huge UK number one in 1970, and also reached the Top Ten of the Canadian charts as well as the higher echelons of the US Billboard Hot 100.

Having begun his career as frontman of a nascent Fairport Convention, singing alongside Sandy Denny, Matthews went on to form his classic song writing vehicle, Matthews Southern Comfort, rooted in American country music and rockabilly. He left the group after three albums (recorded in a space of just two years) to pursue a highly successful US based solo career, where further hits flowed, and form the critically acclaimed Plainsong with The Scaffold’s Andy Roberts.

In 2010 Matthews assembled a new group of spirited and likeminded players for a new Southern Comfort, surpassing all expectations. The musicianship and commitment are second to none and the sumptuous, soaring vocal harmonies instantly bring to mind the original 60s band. Nearly 50 years on, the sounds and songs just keep on coming.
